Girls' Boarding School, Bristol - school redevelopment. Construction of an artificial badger sett to allow the closure of a natural sett under licence. Great crested newt surveys followed by the construction of new and improved ponds in a newly designed wildlife garden to permit the licensed destruction of the existing great crested newt pond. Minehead, Somerset - site for new hospital, sports centre and residential development. Construction of a large artificial badger sett on a greenfield site in Minehead to allow the closure, under Natural England licence, of a substantial natural main sett. Clients: Primary Care Trust and Local Authority.
Norton Fitzwarren, Somerset - large brownfield site for residential development. Following an ecological impact assessment, construction of a bat house for three species of bats, and two artificial otter holts, using modern materials, following the demolition of four small bat roosts and an existing artificial otter holt. Clients: Barratt Homes Exeter, Strongvox and Bellway Homes South West.
Galhampton, Somerset - residential development. Ecological survey followed by design of mitigation for bats and supervision of building demolition under a European Protected Species (EPS) licence. Preparation of ecology report for Code for Sustainable Homes. Client: South Somerset Homes.
Sandford Station, North Somerset - a care home development at a former railway station, including the conversion, under EPS licence, of railway buildings where brown long-eared bat roosts were present. A population of slow worms was relocated to a designated area at the edge of the site and an outlying badger sett was closed under licence from Natural England. Client: Andrew Wilson Partnership and St Monica’s Trust.
Filton North Field – housing development. Full range of ecological works, including construction of artificial badger sett, clerk of works supervision, reptile and breeding bird surveys for new extensive road and housing development. Client: Bovis Homes and British Aerospace.
Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire – proposed wind farm development. Dormouse survey of farmland hedgerow network together with mitigation advice. Client: NPower Renewables
Wellington, Somerset – proposed mixed residential and business development. Badger, bat and dormouse surveys to inform an ecologically led draft masterplan. Bat surveys included emergence, activity and dawn swarming methodologies to establish the use of the site by a maternity colony of an Annex II species. Client: Terence O’Rourke
